Today’s Quote: “The price one pays for pursuing any profession or calling is an intimate knowledge of its ugly side.” – James Baldwin

Today’s Question: Are there some not-so-positive aspects of your pursuits?

My Thoughts: Hoping that the ends justify the means is not a way to live your life. You should be able to be proud of all your pursuits, not have to hide any of them that might not get the proper ‘understanding’ in the view of the public.

Today’s Quote: “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.” – Abraham Lincoln

Today’s Question: Who are you trying to fool?

My Thoughts: Do you really think you can get away with it? You can’t pull the wool over the people’s eyes forever. Or are you trying to pull the wool over your own eyes? Whatever the case, how long do you think you can go on with the charade? What would be the true consequences of coming clean? Are the lies worth the risk?

Today’s Quote: “You better live your best and act your best and think your best today, for today is the sure preparation for tomorrow and all the other tomorrows that follow.” – Harriet Martineau

Today’s Question: Are you doing enough to prepare for tomorrow?

My Thoughts: As I am setting up this question for tomorrow, I am literally preparing for a forecasted ice storm. The frustrating part is that it was forecast to arrive yesterday, and we still see little sign of actually receiving frozen precipitation. But the preparation continues, because it definitely won’t hurt, even if the ice doesn’t come tomorrow. Because it will come eventually. Life works out the same way. Things are going to come up, some with warning, some without, that will take some resolve and determination to get through. And a little preparation before hand will always help.

Today’s Quote: “Men are not against you; they are merely for themselves.” – Gene Fowler

Today’s Question: Are you a selfless person?

My Thoughts: Are you giving enough? Are you giving enough for the right reasons? Stepping aside to let others gain a little bit of the spotlight, and doing it without expecting some sort of cut in return, could do your heart good.

Today’s Quote: “People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of their character.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Today’s Question: Can a change of view bring a change in your character?

My Thoughts: Would you put your world view up against another? Would you choose yours as the right way? Before you prepare to sell your vision as ‘the way,’ take a moment for a clichéd, but probably needed, walked in some other man’s shoes. You might find out just what you’re missing from just having your own point of view as a reference.

Today’s Quote: “Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain.” – Lily Tomlin

Today’s Question: Why not just fix the problem rather than complain about it?

My Thoughts: You’ve known about the problem for a long time, and you’ve been complaining about it for almost as long. But that’s all you have done, complain. You’ve yet to offer solutions to the problem, or any real evidence that it actually is causing a problem. Just complaints. Why don’t you actually do something about the problem, and stop hoping that complaining about it will get it fixed someday by someone? Maybe you’re more comfortable with the problem than a solution.

Think of all the time you spend trying to do a good job at your job. Things like double checking status reports before they are released, gauging the morale of your team members, and doing scheduled maintenance on your critical equipment may come to mind. You do these things to keep operations running smoothly. If everything came to a screeching halt, no work would get done. No advancements could be made, and nobody gets paid. This is how you go about your 9 to 5 job that puts a roof over your head and food on the table. Now, think about having that passion and attention to detail to make sure you are living your life in the same manner.

THIS WEEK’S TIP: Try thinking of your life as a second full time job. It’s not hard to do when you think about housework, the kids, keeping your spouse happy and keeping your self healthy. Okay, try thinking of your life as your primary full time job. Without your health, you’ve got nothing. Without family and friends, you’ve got no support system. And no salary amount in the world can make up for a miserable existence once you pull out of the company parking lot. Take the time to put in the proper planning and maintenance of your mind, body, and soul.

Today’s Quote: “You must learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t possibly live long enough to make them all yourself.” – Sam Levenson

Today’s Question: What can you learn from studying the successes and failures of those who have walked the path ahead of you?

My Thoughts: A lesson learned is a lesson learned, even if it was actually learned by someone else. Wasting knowledge should be considered a crime. Wasting knowledge gained at great expense to another should be a sin. Take advantage of the wisdom of those who have chosen to take the path ahead of you.

Today’s Quote: “If we take care of the moments, the years will take care of themselves.” – Maria Edgeworth

Today’s Question: Are you so focused on future that you can’t see life in the moment?

My Thoughts: You do your best to stay one step ahead, focused on the big picture and what you will receive as a reward for all your hard work. But can you be so focused on what’s ahead of you that completely miss what is right in front of you? Think of life like a trail in the woods. You have to keep looking ahead to make sure you are staying on the trail, but you still have to constantly look at your feet to make sure you don’t trip over a tree root or a rock. Don’t miss out on the moment by focusing too far into the future.

Today’s Quote: “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” – Henry Ford

Today’s Question: How much faith do you have in yourself?

My Thoughts: It all starts with having the faith in yourself to do what you are about to. Where does that faith come from originally? It literally starts moments after you are born by the people who take up the task to raise you. They offer influence that could make the difference in your personality. But even if they didn’t help to instill the best reinforcements in your life–or worse, constantly worked to tear you down–faith in yourself has to come from somewhere inside of you. You have it, you can use it.
